Sounds like a really good idea, but otherwise, if your driving at night on a longer trip, you will need extra power. Or your using it very often at the day, then the power from the solar cell is used by the gps and not to charge the accu. When your coming home at night theres no sun to load the accu. This scenario three times and your out of power. So i think you still need to use a cigarette charger.
If these cases does not fit you, it will work perfect for you.

according my experience, the solar panel do work when you are driving with sunlight day, but it sometimes, still need the travel/car charger sometimes, but it do extend the charging times. For normal use, you might not drive your car more than 10 hours, of course if the daytime still no sunlight for couple days, it will be a problem and you will need the charger. Compare to my other bt GPS, it largely reduce the times I need the charger.

Well that would be the reason for me not to buy one. What is the advantage of solar power if i still will need an charger. Rather buy one without solar and spend the saved money for a second charger. One built in the car i always drive without seeing cabels, the other one if i use another car.

Why are you talking about using this device in your car? Where is the problem with a charger? This cable costs about 5€ and it takes about 10 seconds to connect it... If you use the device in more than one car, just buy more cables and you can install them invisible.

But ever thought of the great advantage, that you can use this device outside a car? On a bike for example, or on foot...
